SIU Field School Discovers Location of 1803-1807 Ft. Kaskaskia Visited by Lewis and Clark
One of the goals of the 2017 field school was to recover information regarding the US Army outpost named Ft. Kaskaskia (1803-1807) which has long been believed to be in the same location as the 1750s French Ft. Kaskaskia. This fort played a vital role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition with several important members of the fort garrison including Patrick Gass and Richard Windsor being recruited for the expedition.
