Lithic Flakes- Binghamton U Archaeological Field School, NY


Some of the most common artifacts found so far on the site include coal, charcoal, brick, and chert flakes, which are leftover lithic flakes from the process of stone tool creation. Other students have been able to find shards of glass, pieces of pottery, and metal objects such as nails. Nails and pottery can be especially helpful in determining the age of a layer of soil, as certain characteristics about the artifact are specific to certain time periods.
